developers, Apple has announced that will allow developers to provide
free trials to users for premium apps. This means that iPhone and iPad
users will be able to get a trail version of premium apps before they
purchase them. Previously, only subscription-based apps could only offer
free trials to users. Apps that did not not have a subscription model
couldn’t offer free trials. According to developers, the problem with
that was users did not want to buy an expensive app before trying. This
made it difficult to earn revenue.
"Non-subscription apps may offer a free time-based trial period before presenting a full unlock option by setting up a Non-Consumable IAP item at Price Tier 0 that follows the naming convention: '14-day Trial," Apple said in its new guidelines. Apple has clearly mentioned that developer must state to the users what services or content will be available after the free-trial gets over.
Last month, a group of App Store developers had formed a union called ‘The Developers Union’ to protest against Apple for not allowing free trials for expensive iOS apps. The developers feared that by creating Apple iOS apps they will not be able to make a living going ahead.
On the other hand, this union also highlighted monetary aspects like iOS app revenue sharing. As of now, Apple gets a 30% of all revenue that iOS developers earn from the App Store. For subscription-based apps, Apple takes a 15% cut when the users subscribes to an app for more than a year. The union expects a “more reasonable revenue cut” from Apple to survive.
For those unaware, 'The Developers Union' is spearheaded by by Brent Simmons, the creator of MarsEdit, Vesper, and NetNewsWire; Jake Schumacher, who created ‘App: The Human Story documentary maker’; product designer Loren Morris and software designer Roger Ogden. “We believe that people who create great software should be able to make a living doing it. So we created The Developers Union to advocate for sustainability in the App Store,” said the union in an open letter to Apple in May.
