Airtel to upgrade network in Mumbai for high speed data

Bharti Airtel announced massive network deployment plans for Mumbai as part of its Project Leap network transformation initiative. Airtel plans to rollout 7000 new mobile sites including large-scale deployment of pre-5G Massive MIMO technology across Mumbai to significantly boost network capacity for high speed data and voice services.

Airtel is also planning to integrate an additional spectrum carrier of 10 MHz in the 2300 MHz band to boost its 4G footprint. The pre-5G Massive MIMO technology will be deployed across all major business hubs and residential locations in the city. For those unaware, Massive MIMO technology expands network capacities on the same spectrum to deliver faster data speeds. This technology comes handy to provide fast data speeds for large number of concurrent users at the same location.
Airtel had recently deployed this solution at Wankhede Stadium throughout the IPL. Airtel had also deployed its Massive MIMO solution at other IPL match venues as well including Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai. Airtel claims to be the first mobile operator in India to commercially deploy Massive MIMO.


The planned roll-out will take the total number of Airtel mobile sites in the city to 27,000. In another news, Bharti Airtel had added 8.4 million subscribers in March according to monthly subscriber report of telecom regulator, TRAI, that was recently released. The telecom subscriber base of private players in India have reached a total of 1.035 billion users in March 2018, according to a new report by industry body COAI. Bharti Airtel continues to hold the top position, with total subscribers reaching 304.9 million adding another 8,402,064 subscribers during March 2018.

Airtel is followed by Vodafone India, which ended March with 222.69 million subscribers, adding 5,637,695. At the end of March 2018, Idea Cellular had the maximum number of subscriber additions, adding 9.14 million to bring its total subscribers to 211.2 million.
